Family Literacy

We work in partnership with organisations to test and deliver family literacy programmes for children with English as an Additional Language and cared for children.

  • We developed and delivered Our Skills funded by What Works for Children’s Social Care in collaboration with Learning Unlimited and UCL Institute of Education.

Our Skills consisted of a 10-week online course for children and parents/carers who had received social work support in the last 6 years. It included content on phonics, reading strategies, stories and storytelling, learning to read, learning through play, and primary education.

  • We created Family Skills funded by the Education Endowment Foundation, Unbound Philanthropy and the Bell Foundation in partnership with Learning Unlimited and UCL Institute of Education. The project was independently evaluated by NatCen Social Research.

Family Skills focused on parental engagement to improve the literacy skills of reception class pupils with EAL. The 30-hour Family Literacy programme aimed to increase parental skills and confidence to support their child’s literacy  at home.

Analysis of Education Endowment Foundation research data indicated that the programme raised literacy levels of children with social care interventions by an additional 4 months.
Family Skills was a 2018 ELTons finalist “An innovative, high-quality, thorough approach which supports community learning”.
