Engaging with Bilingual and Refugee Families

This workshop will explore barriers preventing bilingual families from engaging with family learning. Learning Unlimited will share strategies, activities and resources that promote a differentiated learning environment to respond to diverse needs and different language and literacy levels. 

During this workshop attendees will: :

  • consolidate knowledge about the many advantages of bilingualism 
  • explore barriers bilingual families face in the community and how these impact their attitudes to their bilingualism and their children's education
  • identify a range of strategies to enable bilingual parents to support their children's language development (in home language/s and English) and their education 
  • look at identifying the specific needs of refugees

Workshop Facilitators

This workshop will be delivered by partner Learning Unlimited who will draw on their significant expertise in working with bilingual families, as well as the collective experience of Family Skills, a national family literacy programme, which worked with hundreds of migrant families from diverse backgrounds and with wide-ranging language and literacy needs.
